Tacita Dean’s Craneway Event | Wexner Center for the Arts. The Wexner Center is thrilled to present this evocative film project, which captures Merce Cunningham rehearsing with his company, in conjunction with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company’s Legacy Tour performance this evening. Dean, one of the most thoughtful and talented artists working in film today, spent three days in the fall of 2. Cunningham and his dancers developing an “Event” (the company’s term for a performance composed of movement phrases from past works) in a former Ford assembly plant on the waterfront in the Bay Area. The resulting 1. 6mm feature marks Cunningham’s final appearance on film and was constructed by Dean from seventeen hours of footage. She observed and filmed every stage of the Event rehearsals, from the time Cunningham first walked into and surveyed the space. His interactions with the dancers, the dancers’ own actions, and the changing patterns of daylight in the enormous space, come together in a multilayered evocation of time, space, and movement. All these qualities both fascinate the filmmaker and are inherent parts of the late choreographer’s sensibility. Cunningham developed this site- specific Event as part of series of performances for the University of California at Berkeley’s Cal Performances program in 2. Roy Ward Baker[1] and based on the 1. Flame In The Streets ReviewHot Summer Night by Ted Willis. It opened at the Odeon Leicester Square in London’s West End on 2. June 1. 96. 1. Synopsis. Racial tensions manifest themselves at home, work and on the streets during Bonfire Night in the burgeoning West Indian community of post- war Britain. Trades Union leader Jacko Palmer fights for the rights of a black worker but struggles with the news that his own daughter, Kathie, is planning to marry a West Indian, much against his own logic and the hysterical prejudice of his wife Nell. Play. Hot Summer Night premiered at the Bournemouth Pavilion on 2. September 1. 95. 8, subsequently reaching the New Theatre (now the Noël Coward Theatre) in London’s West End on 2. November. It ran for 5. January 1. 95. 9.[2] Directed by Peter Cotes, the cast comprised John Slater (Jacko), Joan Miller (Nell), Andrée Melly (Kathie), Lloyd Reckord (Sonny Lincoln), Harold Scott (Old Man Palmer), Joyce Howard (Judy Gomez) and Richard Walter (Frank Stephens).“After a leisurely start,” noted The Stage, “the play builds up into a passionate, almost violent piece of theatre,”[3] though in The Spectator. Alan Brien called the play “Ted Willis’s new dramatic pamphlet” and suggested that it failed to rise “above the level of the living newspaper.”[4] In later years Peter Cotes called the play “one of the first pieces about relationships between black and white people,” noting that it “reaped a fine press in a limited run and Willis was treated with more respect as a stage playwright than he had ever been before.”[5] By Willis’s own account, “Another less pleasant reaction came in the form of some hate mail.”[6]Three weeks after the play’s closure, it was televised on 1 February 1. ABC series Armchair Theatre. The director was Ted Kotcheff and the West End cast was retained, with the exception of Joan Miller, whose role was taken by Ruth Dunning. According to The Stage, “The production … was shot mostly in close- up giving greater emphasis to black and white.”[7]Film. The film version, Flame in the Streets, was produced at Pinewood Studios by the Rank Organisation, with Willis moving the action from the ‘hot summer night’ of the play to Guy Fawkes Night; filming began, appropriately, on 5 November 1. Willis also added two characters, Gabriel Gomez and Harry Mitchell, who are only referred to in the play, and opened out the action to include a nocturnal street brawl in the final reel. Producer- director Roy Ward Baker made the film in Cinema. Scope, with a cast headed by John Mills, Sylvia Syms, Brenda De Banzie, Earl Cameron and Johnny Sekka. The new title recalled Willis’s earlier play No Trees in the Street, which had itself been filmed two years before. Flame in the Streets opened in London on 2. June 1. 96. 1, with general release following on 9 July.[8]Daily Herald critic Paul Dehn called it a “terrifying and ferocious film”,[9] whereas in The Spectator Isabel Quigley observed “its impact is mild,” conceding “the obvious visual comparison between the outward and inward flames and fireworks” was effectively handled.[1. Willis’s script was nominated for a ‘Best British Screenplay’ BAFTA award,[1. John Burke for Four Square Books. In his autobiography (published in 2. Roy Ward Baker noted the film had recently been shown at a Brixton cinema “to mark the 5. Britain of the steamer Windrush, bringing Caribbeans to work here… Some of the older ones [in the audience] testified that it was a true picture of the conditions the incomers faced and in some areas still do face.”[1. This article is about Amos, a minor prophet in the Hebrew Bible and Christian Bible. For the father of Isaiah, a prophet in the Hebrew Bible, see Amoz. Amos (; Hebrew: עָמוֹס , Modern Amos, Tiberian ʻāmōs) was one of the Twelve Minor Prophets. An older contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah, Amos was active c. BC during the reign of Jeroboam II, (7. BC). He was from the southern Kingdom of Judah but preached in the northern Kingdom of Israel. Amos wrote at a time of relative peace and prosperity but also of neglect of Yaweh's laws. He spoke against an increased disparity between the very wealthy and the very poor. His major themes of social justice, God's omnipotence, and divine judgment became staples of prophecy. The Book of Amos is attributed to him. Before becoming a prophet, Amos was a sheep herder and a sycamore fig farmer.[2] Amos' prior professions and his claim "I am not a prophet nor a son of a prophet" (7: 1. Amos was not from the school of prophets, which Amos claims makes him a true prophet. Amos' declaration marks a turning- point in the development of Old Testament prophecy. It is not mere chance that Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and almost all of the prophets who are more than unknown personages to whom a few prophetical speeches are ascribed, give first of all the story of their special calling. All of them thereby seek to protest against the suspicion that they are professional prophets, because the latter discredited themselves by flattering national vanities and ignoring the misdeeds of prominent men.[3]The Bible speaks of his ministry and prophecies concluding around 7. Amos YeeAmos 1: 1, ".. two years before the earthquake."[4] The prophet Zechariah likely was referencing this same earthquake several centuries later. From Zechariah 1. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah."[4]Despite being from the southern kingdom of Judah Amos' prophetic message was aimed at the Northern Kingdom of Israel, particularly the cities of Samaria and Bethel.[5]Jeroboam II (c. B. C.), ruler of the Northern kingdom, had rapidly conquered Syria, Moab, and Ammon, and thereby extended his dominions from the source of the Orontes on the north to the Dead Sea on the south. The whole northern empire of Solomon thus practically restored had enjoyed a long period of peace and security marked by a revival of artistic and commercial development. Social corruption and the oppression of the poor and helpless were prevalent. Many availed themselves of the throngs which attended the sacred festivals to indulge in immoderate enjoyment and tumultuous revelry. Others, carried away by the free association with heathen peoples which resulted from conquest or commercial contact, went so far as to fuse with the Lord's worship that of pagan deities.[6]Amos is the first of the prophets to write down the messages he has received. He has always been admired for the purity of his language, his beauty of diction, and his poetic art. In all these respects he is Isaiah's spiritual progenitor.[3] What we know of Amos derives solely from the book that he himself authored.[7] This makes it hard to know who the historical Amos truly was. Amos felt himself called to preach in Bethel, where there was a royal sanctuary (vii. But he is denounced by the head priest Amaziah to King Jeroboam II and is advised to leave the kingdom. There is no reason to doubt that he was actually forced to leave the northern kingdom and to return to his native country. Being thus prevented from bringing his message to an end, and from reaching the ear of those to whom he was sent, he had recourse to writing. If they could not hear his messages, they could read them, and if his contemporaries refused to do so, following generations might still profit by them. No earlier instance of a literary prophet is known; but the example he gave was followed by others in an almost unbroken succession. It can not be proved that Hosea knew the book of Amos, though there is no reason to doubt that he was acquainted with the latter's work and experiences. El Cenador De AmosIt is certain that Isaiah knew his book, for he follows and even imitates him in his early speeches (compare Amos, v. Isa. i. 1. 1- 1. 5; Amos, iv. Isa., etc., ix. 7 et seq., ii. Cheyne concludes that Amos wrote the record of his prophetical work at Jerusalem, after his expulsion from the northern kingdom, and that he committed it to a circle of faithful followers residing there.[3]The apocryphal work The Lives of the Prophets records that Amos was killed by the son of Amaziah, priest of Bethel. It further states that before he died, Amos made his way back to his homeland and was buried there.[8]God's omnipotence and divine judgement[edit]"Amos saw God as personally in control of all the world. Amos made clear that, contrary to the view within pagan religious and among the majority of Israelites, God was not only the God of Israel but of all the world. While the average Israelite may have remembered with national pride the special place of Israel's exodus from Egypt, Amos maintained that God was also behind the early movements of the Philistines and Arameans (Amos 9: 7)" [9]Amos believed that "God is Lord over all human history and that all men are equal in his sight. By this, he implies that any other nation could stand in the same place of privilege which Israel had known. Both God's concern in love and his concern in judgment are without discrimination. Neither geographical limitations nor race matter in the least when God seeks to accomplish his purpose." [9]"No modern interpreter has denied that he taught that God is ethical to the extent that he cannot be affected by ceremonial as such. For Amos .. religion consists not in ritual but in righteousness. YHWH, God of justice, demands right living not oblations."[1. Amos thus proclaimed an ethical God so clearly that only ethical relations between men could assure divine favor; and nothing in his words indicates that he recognized any other approach to God. Such an approach naturally involves worship - a term that includes the whole process of man's communion with his God; even in ancient Israel worship was never confined to sacrifices and offerings, as witness Jacob at Bethel, Moses before the burning bush, Elijah on Mt. Horeb. Man also has never failed to devise new forms of approach to God to accord with his changed conceptions of Deity."[1. Teachings[edit]Some of his main teachings are: Prayers and sacrifices do not make up for bad deeds. Practice of religious acts is no insurance against the judgment of God" and that "privilege involves opportunity, or escap- ism.. Immunity cannot claimed simply because of past favor of God, irrespective of deeds and the measure of faithful service."[9]Behaving justly is much more important than ritual (Amos 5: 2. Ceremonial worship has no intrinsic value.. God consists in justice and righteousness (5: 2. Amos believed in economic justice, "the conviction of Amos that economic justice was necessary to preserve the nation (whereas his opponents asserted that sacrifices and offerings were preserving it) forced him to conclude that a God who wanted the nation preserved must want justice and want it always, and could never therefore want sacrifices, which abetted and condoned injustice."[1. Amos was an uncompromising monotheist. There is not a verse in his writing that admits the existence of other deities."[1. And these ideas were not based in rational thought. They were based in a deep emotive response to God's righteousness. The relationship between the people of Israel is articulated to be a moral contract. If the people of Israel fall below the moral requirements of God, then their relationship will certainly be dissolved. Social justice[edit]Ancient interpretations. The ancient exhortation to what in modern times would be considered social justice is expressed by the voice of God in Amos' teachings. Amos is told by God that the Israelites are going to face divine intervention as institutionalized oppression was running rampant in Israel. God expressed this institutionalized oppression by saying that the Israelites were practicing religiosity without righteousness. By oppressing the poor and failing to practice justice the Israelites were behaving unrighteously; social justice was to be enacted as a core of God's message in Amos' prophetic teachings.[1. Modern interpretations. Influences of or references to Amos' teachings can be found in certain modern political and civil rights speeches. In Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream", King states "we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream", which is an allusion to Amos 5: 2. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never- failing stream!".[1. Bernie Sanders also referenced Amos 5: 2. Feast days/religious veneration[edit]Within Roman, Byzantine, and other high liturgical churches saints are regularly celebrated and venerated on Feast days throughout the calendar year. This practice honors Christian martyrs on the traditional day of their death with facts about their life and insights attributed to them meant to edify the faithful. On the Eastern Orthodoxliturgical calendar, Amos' feast day is celebrated on June 1. Julian Calendar, June 1. June 2. 8th of the modern Gregorian Calendar). He is commemorated along with the other minor prophets in the Calendar of Saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church on July 3. In the Eastern Church the Troparion of Amos is sung: "Celebrating the memory / Of Your Prophet Amos, O Lord, / For his sake, we entreat You, save our souls."Reflecting Amos' sense of urgency and social justice, the Kontakion of Amos is sung: "Purifying your fervent heart by the Spirit, / O glorious Prophet Amos, / And receiving the gift of prophecy from on high, / You cry with a loud voice to the nations: / This is our God, and there is none beside Him."[1. George Lucas: “I will probably never ever shoot another Film on Film”. God the Father (represented by an old patriarch with white hair) by Cima da Conegliano, c. God the Father is a title given to God in various religions, most prominently in Christianity. In mainstream trinitarian Christianity, God the Father is regarded as the first person of the Trinity, followed by the second person God the Son (Jesus Christ) and the third person God the Holy Spirit. Since the second century, Christian creeds included affirmation of belief in "God the Father (Almighty)", primarily as his capacity as "Father and creator of the universe".[1] Yet, in Christianity the concept of God as the father of Jesus Christ goes metaphysically further than the concept of God as the Creator and father of all people,[2] as indicated in the Apostle's Creed where the expression of belief in the "Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth" is immediately, but separately followed by in "Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord", thus expressing both senses of fatherhood.[3]Overview[edit]Although similarities exist among religions, the common language and the shared concepts about God and his title Father among the Abrahamic religions is quite limited, and each religion has very specific belief structures and religious nomenclature with respect to the subject.[4] While a religious teacher in one faith may be able to explain the concepts to his own audience with ease, significant barriers remain in communicating those concepts across religious boundaries.[4]Christianity. In Christianity, God is addressed as the Father, in part because of his active interest in human affairs, in the way that a father would take an interest in his children who are dependent on him and as a father, he will respond to humanity, his children, acting in their best interests.[5][6][7][8] Many believe they can communicate with God and come closer to him through prayer – a key element of achieving communion with God.[9][1. In general, the title Father (capitalized) signifies God's role as the life- giver, the authority, and powerful protector, often viewed as immense, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent with infinite power and charity that goes beyond human understanding.[1. The National Center for Fathering strives to inspire and equip fathers and father figures to be actively engaged in the life of every child. 137.5k Followers, 383 Following, 978 Posts - See Instagram photos and videos from Father (@father). For instance, after completing his monumental work Summa Theologica, Catholic St. Thomas Aquinas concluded that he had not yet begun to understand ‘God the Father’.[1. Although the term "Father" implies masculine characteristics, God is usually defined as having the form of a spirit without any human biological gender, e. Catechism of the Catholic Church #2. God is neither man nor woman: he is God".[1. Although God is never directly addressed as "Mother", at times motherly attributes may be interpreted in Old Testament references such as Isa 4. Isa 4. 9: 1. 4–1. Isa 6. 6: 1. 2–1. In the New Testament, the Christian concept of God the Father may be seen as a continuation of the Jewish concept, but with specific additions and changes, which over time made the Christian concept become even more distinct by the start of the Middle Ages.[1. The conformity to the Old Testament concepts is shown in Matthew 4: 1. Luke 4: 8 where in response to temptation Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6: 1. Father\u0027s Day CardsIt is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve."[1. Corinthians 8: 6 shows the distinct Christian teaching about the agency of Christ by first stating: "there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him" and immediately continuing with "and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him."[1. This passage clearly acknowledges the Jewish teachings on the uniqueness of God, yet also states the role of Jesus as an agent in creation.[1. Over time, the Christian doctrine began to fully diverge from Judaism through the teachings of the Church Fathers in the second century and by the fourth century belief in the Trinity was formalized.[1. According to Mary Rose D'Angelo and James Barr, the Aramaic term Abba was in the early times of the New Testament neither markedly a term of endearment,[2. Judaism. In Judaism, God is described as "Father" as he is seen as the absolute one, indivisible and incomparable, transcendent, immanent, and non- corporeal God of creation and history.[2. The God in Judaism is the giver of the sabbath and the two torahs—written, oral, mystical tradition—to his chosen people.[2. In Judaism, the use of the "Father" title is generally a metaphor, referring to the role as Life- giver and Law- giver, and is one of many titles by which Jews speak of and to God.[2]The Jewish concept of God is similar to the Christian view, being that Christianity has Jewish roots, though there are some differences, regarding things like the role of a Mediator. And also the concept of "God the Father" in Biblical Judaism is generally more metaphorical. Father John MistyNumbers 2. 3: 1. 9).[2. Islam. The Islamic concept of God differs from the Christian and Jewish views, the term "father" is not formally applied to God by Muslims, and the Christian notion of the Trinity is rejected in Islam.[3. Also Muslims believe God is Wali. Wali means "custodian", "protector" and "helper". In Quran 9: 2. 3, Allah is more preferred to Father. Also, Allah is called as Rahim. Rahim means both "Merciful, Compassionate" and "Womb, Uterus". Bahá'í Faith. In the Bahá'í faith God is also addressed as father. Christianity[edit]. A figurative drawing of God, in the old German prayer books (Waldburg- Gebetbuch), about 1. History[edit]Since the second century, creeds in the Western Church have included affirmation of belief in "God the Father (Almighty)", the primary reference being to "God in his capacity as Father and creator of the universe".[1] This did not exclude either the fact the "eternal father of the universe was also the Father of Jesus the Christ" or that he had even "vouchsafed to adopt [the believer] as his son by grace".[1]Creeds in the Eastern Church (known to have come from a later date) began with an affirmation of faith in "one God" and almost always expanded this by adding "the Father Almighty, Maker of all things visible and invisible" or words to that effect.[1]By the end of the first century, Clement of Rome had repeatedly referred to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and linked the Father to creation, 1 Clement 1. Father and Creator of the universe".[3. Around AD 2. 13 in Adversus Praxeas (chapter 3) Tertullian is believed to have provided a formal representation of the concept of the Trinity, i. God exists as one "substance" but three "Persons": The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and with God the Father being the Head.[3. Tertullian also discussed how the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son.[3. While the expression "from the Father through the Son" is also found among them.[3. The Nicene Creed, which dates to 3. Son (Jesus Christ) is "eternally begotten of the Father", indicating that their divine Father- Son relationship is seen as not tied to an event within time or human history. New Testament[edit]There is a deep sense in which Christians believe that they are made participants in the eternal relationship of Father and Son, through Jesus Christ. Christians call themselves adopted children of God: [3. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. In Christianity the concept of God as the Father of Jesus is distinct from the concept of God as the Creator and Father of all people, as indicated in the Apostle's Creed.[3] The profession in the creed begins with expressing belief in the "Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth" and then immediately, but separately, in "Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord", thus expressing both senses of fatherhood within the creed.[3]Old Testament[edit]According to Marianne Meye Thompson, in the Old Testament, God is called "Father" with a unique sense of familiarity. In addition to the sense in which God is "Father" to all men because he created the world (and in that sense "fathered" the world), the same God is also uniquely the law- giver to the his chosen people. He maintains a special, covenantal father- child relationship with the people, giving them the Shabbat, stewardship of his prophecies, and a unique heritage in the things of God, calling Israel "my son" because he delivered the descendants of Jacob out of slavery in Egypt [Hosea 1. Avraham, Isaac and Yaacov. In the Hebrew Scriptures, in Isaiah 6. JP) it reads: "For You are our father, for Abraham did not know us, neither did Israel recognize us; You, O Lord, are our father; our redeemer of old is your name." To God, according to Judaism, is attributed the fatherly role of protector. He is titled the Father of the poor, of the orphan and the widow, their guarantor of justice. He is also titled the Father of the king, as the teacher and helper over the judge of Israel.[4. According to Alon Goshen- Gottstein, in the Old Testament "Father" is generally a metaphor; it is not a proper name for God but rather one of many titles by which Jews speak of and to God. In Christianity fatherhood is taken in a more literal and substantive sense, and is explicit about the need for the Son as a means of accessing the Father, making for a more metaphysical rather than metaphorical interpretation.[2]Trinitarian[edit]To Trinitarian Christians (which include Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and most but not all Protestant denominations), God the Father is not at all a separate god from God the Son (of whom Jesus is the incarnation) and the Holy Spirit, the other Hypostases of the Christian Godhead.[4.
